TTC chair declares candidacy
Adam Giambrone, the chair of the Toronto Transit Commission and star of a viral YouTube video, has officially joined the mayor’s race.
Giambrone, 32, was joined by campaign manager John Laschinger and a crowd of more than 20 journalists Monday, Feb. 1, morning to file his nomination papers at City Hall.
Laschinger managed both of Mayor David Miller’s successful campaigns for mayor in 2003 and 2006.
Giambrone spoke briefly to reporters, but wouldn’t speak about any details of his platform until this evening, when he meets with supporters at a College Street restaurant.
He said he would stay on as chair of the TTC until the election, and he committed to listening to Toronto voters.
Giambrone’s candidacy was hardly a surprise. On Thursday, the councillor for Ward 18 (Davenport) appeared in a video posted on YouTube, whimsically going through various calisthenics before declaring himself “ready” for a run for the mayoralty.
Giambrone will be entering a crowded field of candidates for the mayor’s job, which voters will choose between on Oct. 25.
Also running are former deputy premier George Smitherman, Liberal party insider Rocco Rossi, city councillors Giorgio Mammoliti and Joe Pantalone, and magazine publisher Sarah Thomson.
