Ward 14 (Parkdale-High Park)

Population numbers may be dropping for Parkdale-High Park Ward 14 – Census Canada says the population fell 7.7 per cent between 2001 and 2006 – but it hasn’t dented the area’s trademark community activism.

The ward, with a population of just over 50,000, is comprised of strong neighbourhoods including: West Bend/Junction, Parkdale, Roncesvalles, Sunny Side and High Park – all of them represented by residents’ associations.

And that doesn’t include a myriad of issue-based groups such as the Clean Air Coalition, fighting to have electric replace diesel for the proposed airport rail link.

The commercial sector, represented largely by small businesses, also has a voice with Business Improvement Associations representing Bloor by the Park, Junction Gardens, Liberty Village, Parkdale Village and Roncesvalles Village.

Although an ‘inner city’ ward, public spaces are important with Rita Cox Park on Machells Avenue having come on stream and with the much anticipated completion of the ‘Dufferin Jog’ slated to also include a unique public ampitheatre.

Improvements to the lakefront – and improved access to it – continues to be an open file.
