1. What key issues define your campaign platform?
This election has become a fight for the public services from which a working neighbourhood like ours benefits. We know the value of public transit, libraries, community centres, parks, police, firefighters, childcare, seniors’ services, clean water and waste collection. I will stand up for the people of Ward 18 and work to ensure public resources remain public, accessible, and accountable to all.
This includes working hard to restore funding to the Transit City light rail plan and ensure the Georgetown Rail Corridor is electrified. It also means investing in safe, clean public spaces and Complete Streets so our roads are safer for all road-users.
I will bring people together to plan our communities before development applications are made so that development includes local jobs, affordable housing, parks, and transit. I will ensure that properties zoned for employment uses in Ward 18 are respected so that we continue creating local jobs.
2. Why are you the best candidate for this position?
When I moved into Ward 18 ten years ago, I immediately appreciated its traditions of hard work, social diversity, creativity and community engagement. Since then I have worked in the community and at City Hall bringing people together to build consensus and lead positive change.
Our community has come a long way. We have revitalized our neighbourhoods and worked together to make progressive and sustainable improvements. I am running for Councillor because I want to work with residents, community groups, local leaders, artists, and businesses to nurture and sustain this positive growth.
Over the last decade I have developed strong relationships with the people of Ward 18 and I have the experience to bring us all together to build on our successes so that we can continue to effectively invest in our community.
3. What specifically do you plan to do for your ward, if elected?
- Advocate for improved transit service with stable TTC fares, electric trains, and complete the renovation of Dufferin subway station
- Fight for local control over planning decisions and ensure everyone has a voice in how our neighbourhoods change
- Ensure development meets community expectations for excellent design, great public spaces, good local jobs and affordable housing
- Work to keep City services public, affordable, and accessible for everyone
- Green our neighbourhoods with more trees, parks, and community gardens
- Work hard to build safer communities
- Support local businesses and new industries, and protect our employment lands to bring jobs back to the neighbourhood
4. Please provide details on your personal bio.
I have lived in small towns and suburbs, but I’ve always been drawn to the city. When I moved to Toronto in 2001, I found a home in Ward 18. I was thrilled by the cultural diversity of the community and immediately recognized traditions of hard work and cooperation. I sought out and found community groups like DIG-IN. I became involved in local advocacy as a member of the Davenport Municipal Association, and became the local councillor’s assistant in late 2003, where I continued my work with residents in Ward 18 to the present day. 5. Who do you plan to support for mayor?
I will work with whichever candidate the people of Toronto elect to be our mayor whenever it’s in the best interests of our community and our city.
We need a mayor who understands the importance of local communities in decision-making. We need a mayor who understands the importance of city-building, hard work, and positive change. We need a mayor who will build on our successes socially, economically and environmentally, and make the tough decisions necessary to provide strong public services to our community.
