1. What key issues define your campaign platform?
The top priority for Toronto’s next municipal government should be taxation as it relates to eliminating the wasteful use of tax dollars. Taxpayers have been subjected to countless tax increases and new taxes over the last two municipal terms and this needs to stop. City Hall must start looking at ways to save the taxpayer money, because the current tax and spend policy in Toronto is both unfair and irresponsible. For instance – thousands of contracts are signed by the City of Toronto every year and precious few are competitively bid upon. This is not in the best interest of the taxpayer, wasting millions of our hard earned dollars. More competition for contracts is key to the financial health of our city. Every dollar we save doing this is a dollar we can spend on social programs and infrastructure, and another dollar we do not have to squeeze from the taxpayer.
2. Why are you the best candidate for this position?
My campaign is generating incredible momentum because we are talking about the issues that matter most to Torontonians, and it is clearly resonating with the people of Ward 19. Addressing the serious economic issues facing the city, and fixing an inefficient and unreliable transit system are issues that reach every corner of our ward. These are two issues that none of the other candidates are completely and totally committed to. The TTC is the backbone of this city, but the backbone is broken. Assuming otherwise is ignoring the truth about the TTC. We need to fix it, and it starts with putting experts into the decision making positions. Did you know that 9 of the 12 positions on the TTC board are city councillors? No successful business has anything less than experts in these types of positions. The TTC should be no exception.
3. What specifically do you plan to do for your ward, if elected?
The Liberty Village Pedestrian Bridge is long overdue – so long that some doubt it will happen. I think it needs to happen, and as Ward 19 councilor I will make it a priority to get it done. Pedestrians, cyclists, and commuters need a safe, convenient connection between Liberty Village and King West. This area is experiencing rapid growth, bringing greater opportunity for local businesses. Let’s not forget, the City has said this should happen. A promise was made to people who moved into the neighbourhood. As Ward 19 councilor, I will push to have that promise kept.
4. Please provide details on your personal bio.
I have been a television broadcaster, fundraiser and community leader. I worked with Right to Play, St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Toronto East General Hospital and the CNIB. In 2008, I founded the Queen West Musicfest, held in Trinity Bellwoods Park, supporting local musicians and charities. My wife (Jennifer Hedger of TSN) and I, live Ward 19. If elected, I am determined to be a voice that speaks out for integrity, responsibility and efficiency. I will speak proudly of the diverse population, thriving business community and creative vibe that make Ward 19 Toronto’s most dynamic and eclectic neighbourhood in Toronto.
5. Who do you plan to support for mayor?
I am a non-partisan candidate, and as such, I am not supporting any of the mayoral candidates.
