Ward 20 (Trinity-Spadina)

Ward 20 (Trinity Spadina) is a densely-populated downtown ward that encompasses some of the city’s most recognizable neighbourhoods, including the Annex to the north, the Entertainment District along King Street, and the portion of the western waterfront that accesses the Toronto Island Airport.

Under former city councillor Olivia Chow, the ward had long been a formidable NDP stronghold. But in 2006, voters turned away from New Democrats and elected former broadcast journalist Adam Vaughan as their councillor.

According to Vaughan, the 2010 election will focus on talk about the redevelopment of the mixed-income Alexandra Park neighbourhood, creation of a governance model for community parks, and a reconfiguration of the John Street entertainment district that could include turning Richmond and Adelaide Streets into two-way streets.

Aside from that, the election will be taking place in the wake of the G20 conference this summer – which will have a profound impact on businesses and workers in the south end of the ward – and questions might also arise around the opening of a $5 million homeless shelter and referral centre in a former nightclub at 129 Peter Street.
