1. What key issues define your campaign platform?
I’m running to focus on three main issues.
Firstly, we need to ensure the city is managing its finances responsibly by increasing transparency around the budgeting process and doing a better job of measuring how money is being spent to benefit Torontonians.
Secondly, the TTC must be improved by focusing on customer service, reliability and cleanliness, while also catching up on long-overdue infrastructure expansion. In short, transit needs to be quicker, friendly and more convenient.
Finally, I will ensure smart, sustainable development that preserves our past while planning for our future by creating detailed neighbourhood plans and improving the Toronto green development standard.
Those localized plans and higher standards will keep Toronto affordable and livable with neighbourhoods that thrive. All of this must be done with the highest levels of consultation and transparency so that all Ward 27 knows they have a councillor working for them.
2. Why are you the best candidate for this position?
I’ve lived in Ward 27 for the past 10 years, I work here and went to school here. I’ve had the privilege of living in many amazing and diverse neighborhoods from the downtown core to Yorkville to Church and Wellesley streets to the Garden District, giving me a good understanding of how important it is to have a city councillor who represents the whole ward.
I have business experience in the private sector achieving ambitious goals with limited resources, and governance experience in the not-for-profit sector overseeing finance and policy. I’m the only candidate to bring this mixture to the table, while also not being endorsed by or beholden to any mayoral campaign or special interest at city hall.
3. What specifically do you plan to do for your ward, if elected?
I will bring a new level of transparency and community engagement to city hall. In addition to the obviously needed (yet currently lacking) steps like placing voting records (as well as why I voted a specific way) and community information online, I will use a mixture of online and offline (in-person, face-to-face) tools and meetings to make sure every single resident feels like they have a direct connection to their city councillor. That high level of transparency and involvement will be applied to everything from finance to development.
4. Please provide details on your personal bio.
As a policy author I’ve focused on the health of our democracy itself, speaking out (including on TVO’s The Agenda with Steve Paikin) about the need for democratic renewal. Being a non-profit board member has cemented a firm belief in the need for keen oversight and financial discipline.
As an activist, I’ve fought for human rights and equality, including helping to ensure our country’s second largest denomination would support and perform same-sex marriages. I earned my bachelor of arts at Ryerson University and made a career building businesses around websites and mobile applications for some of Canada’s largest media companies.
5. Who do you plan to support for mayor?
I’ve intentionally not aligned myself with any mayoral candidate because I don’t want to be compromised in my ability to represent, first and foremost, the residents of our ward. Rather than be beholden to or an enemy of the new mayor, I will work to find common interest with whoever is elected.
