1. What key issues define your campaign platform?
I am serious about making our ward and city safer, cleaner and more liveable.
Many of you have shared your stories of traffic congestion and the lack of a modern public transit system. You want to see roads and sidewalks in good state of repair.
Street crime remains an issue in parts of the ward. I have heard over and over again, you want value for your hard-earned tax dollars – and this means getting high-quality service whether it be snow removal or garbage collection.
Just as important, I want to work with our city builders in the private, public and non-profit sectors to unleash Toronto’s full potential, creativity and talent.
To be a true world city, we must punch above our weight and be that place where corporations and non-governmental organizations want to locate their head offices and people.
We can be North America’s next hub for arts and culture.
2. Why are you the best candidate for this position?
A councillor needs to be committed to working with real people and their problems in the community, and then be able to change things so those problems are not repeated.
A councillor needs to contribute to the building of vision that makes Toronto a true world city. I have the experience, having worked the frontline as a police officer and later behind the scenes as a policy advisor for governments in Canada and abroad, including for Boris Johnson, mayor of London, England.
I have an a masters of business administration (MBA) and previously served as a director of Alterna Savings. My experience has prepared me well to work for you from Day 1 at city hall to make a real difference to real lives.
And, it also means working behind the scenes to change the way business is done at city hall so we have a government that works for you.
3. What specifically do you plan to do for your ward, if elected?
I want to revitalize our neighbourhoods by making our sidewalks, streets, parks and TTC stations clean, and in a constant state of good repair.
I want to keep local traffic flowing by ensuring that road works and construction projects are delivered on time and carried out in a way that lets people move efficiently around the city; and we need a revision of Jarvis Street by removing the bicycle lanes.
I want to make our streets and parks safer by increasing police presence, “designing out” crime and disorder in “hot spot” problem areas and reviving neighbourhood watch programs.
4. Please provide details on your personal bio.
After completing his MBA, Ken spent more than a decade working in public service, first on the front lines as a police officer and later as a health policy advisor at Queen’s Park. Ken is a former assistant director with the British Department of Business where he worked to cut red tape. He has also worked for Mayor Boris Johnson of London, England, as a senior advisor on community safety and police oversight. Ken brings business and financial skills to city hall having served as a director of Alterna Savings, a $1.8 billion financial institution.
5. Who do you plan to support for mayor?
As a councillor, I work for the citizens and not the mayor or city. However, I will be voting for George Smitherman because I know him from his time as my MPP and from when I worked at Queen’s Park.
