CAMPAIGN MANAGER: Glenn Gustafson
—————————————————————-
What key issues define your campaign platform?
The key issues originate from residents’ interests.
As our community goes through unprecedented growth, we need to ensure that developments respect the character of our neighbourhoods and have a vibrant mix of uses and residents.
With both new and established communities, we need to make sure that necessary services and opportunities are available and accessible to everyone, whether it is child care, youth programs, parks and recreation facilities, or seniors programs.
We also need to continue investing in our infrastructure and city-building projects, to keep our community a great place to live.
In addition, environmental initiatives are vital to improve everyone’s quality of life and to make the city a world leader in sustainability.
The key to all of these issues is community involvement. I remain committed to ensuring that residents are properly informed about local and city-wide policies and that proper consultation takes place.
Why are you the best candidate for this position?
With a new Mayor and new administration, City Council will go through many changes. It is important to have a representative who is experienced and can ensure that our community’s voice is heard.
As a City Councillor for five terms, I have acquired the skills to involve the community and a deep knowledge of the workings of City Hall. I know the people, characteristics, challenges, and unique needs of all of the different neighbourhoods in our ward.
Much has already been accomplished in our community, such as opening the Wellesley Community Centre, the pedestrian promenades, and improvements to our public spaces. We need to make sure that projects in our community, such as the revitalization of Regent Park, the development of the waterfront, and the redevelopment of the St. Lawrence Market North Building, continue to address the community’s vision.
What specifically do you plan to do for your ward, if elected?
I am committed to ensuring that our community remains informed and involved in initiatives that affect the quality of life in our neighbourhoods.
Along with continuing work on projects already underway, including the redevelopment of Regent Park, the waterfront, and the St. Lawrence North Market, there are many new opportunities that the community is eager to pursue. I will work on acquiring the First Parliament site, ensuring the best possible design for the Pan Am Village, improvements to Moss Park and St. James Town buildings through Tower Renewal, and investing in our parks, recreation, and cultural facilities.
Please provide details on your personal bio.
As a Councillor, and previously as a school trustee, my public service always focuses on working with residents to build healthy and safe communities.
In my fifth term, I served as a member of the Executive Committee and Arts Council, Chair of the Toronto & East York Community Council, Vice-Chair of the Police Services Board and the Affordable Housing Committee.
Before entering politics, I was a teacher in an inner city school and president of the Co-op Housing Federation of Toronto.
After living for almost 40 years in Cabbagetown, my family and I recently moved into the revitalized Regent Park.
Who do you plan to support for mayor?
George Smitherman
