What key issues define your campaign platform?
I believe that the city has experienced deterioration since amalgamation and that we need to restore and revitalize the infrastructure. We need to ensure that the local voice is ignited and that we are guided by the main priorities of the people of Toronto. Residents tell me that the city has become less affordable and that they pay more and receive less. We need to get spending under control and improve service delivery.I am focusing on improved quality of life and sustainability. We need as many different forms of transportation as possible and public transit needs to be available to everyone.
I am a champion for small business and Ward 29 is a live/work community.I hope to increase green and recreational space .I will focus on daycare, children’s programs and senior’s services.
Why are you the best candidate for this position?
I am the only candidate who has been elected before. In 1994 I was elected to the East York Board of Education. In 1998 I became a City Councillor and represented 75% of the current Ward 29. I then became Councillor Ward 26(Leaside Thorncliffe,Flemingdon and Wynford). In 2006 I ran for Mayor and came second.I understand how to get things done and who to contact. I am not a member of a political party and am not aligned with a Mayor candidate.I work hard and am committed to service. I will have a neighbourhood office and be a strong voice on behalf of Ward 29.
What specifically do you plan to do for your ward, if elected?
I have a plan for revitalization as there has been deterioration. I will obtain budget dollars for infrastructure including water/wastewater and road improvements. We need better bus scheduling, cycling routes and parking arrangements for vehicles and bikes. I hope to create community gardens to grow food locally and increase our tree canopy. I hope to create more green space as well as partner with the schools to create community hubs to provide access on weekends and evenings. In this live/work community I will be a champion for small business. I will address daycare, children’s programming and seniors’ quality of life.I will strengthen tenant, residents’ assoociations and BIA’s. I will focus on the immediate needs and sustainability of the Ward.
Personal bio:
I graduated from Queen’s with a BA-BPHE. I worked for Procter and Gamble 10 years.. I created an After Four program in Leaside which provided care/enrichment to 5 local schools (50 programs per week) I was a community activist through ratepayer groups and sought election as a school trustee. I served on the East York Board for 3 years and then ran in the amalgamation election for City Councillor. I served on Council for 8 years and was Chair of Works and Vice- Chair of the Budget Committee. I ran for Mayor and finished second with 32% of the vote. Recently I have volunteered on boards focused on homelessness, seniors and heritage. I have researched best municipal practices and worked in rural NL on a tourism plan. I have authored two books and presently am writing “The History of East York”. Married with four children.
Who do you plan to support for mayor?
I am not supporting or endorsing any candidate for Mayor as I prefer to remain independent. In this way I can do my best to work with the elected Mayor and help them be the best Mayor they can be.
I know all of the candidates and can work with all of them especially because I am independent and will be able to start with an excellent relationship on behalf of Ward 29.
