What key issues define your campaign platform?

The key issues in my platform are:
Respecting and listening to people and giving them a voice in a transparent and open decision making process in our community so we come up with best fit solutions that benefit the most people and utilizes their knowledge, expertise, imagination and that builds solutions that deal with the issues and not just the symptoms.
The budget crisis.  The City of Toronto has had 8 years of deficits including a 2009 $447 million deficit that has resulted in our $3 billion debt.  If we don’t deal with this now then we’ll have to make  harsher choices that could result in recreation centres closing, more infrastructure decay, transit and emergency services cuts and worse.
Transportation.  We need to build a comprehensive transportation network that works for everyone including pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and cars and reduces travel time and pollution and improves our standard of living.

Why are you the best candidate for this position?
I’m the best candidate because of the skills, experience, leadership, vision, passion and commitment I bring.  I understand that I’m the community’s public servant and that it’s my  responsibility to make their issues, my issues.
I’ve built a career on serving others respectfully.  Throughout my life I’ve been committed to giving back through councils in school, university and human rights organizations.
For 6 years now I’ve helped management and employees with solutions that keep workers working (including disabled), lowers costs and increases efficiencies.  Recently I’ve  worked with others at the national level to reform the Canada Pension Plan and make it work for everyone.
Finally, I’ve been lucky enough to have my life enriched by living in the area for 21 years.  I’m extremely grateful for that and want to build on what we have so we can achieve what could be.

What specifically do you plan to do for your ward, if elected?
I intend to open a constituency office as soon as possible to make sure that the voices, opinions, issues, concerns and solutions of everyone in the ward can be heard as easily as possible.  I intend to meet with as many residents’ groups and BIAs in the first 100 days as possible so we can start looking for “made in the Beach” solutions that bring together as many people on as many different issues as possible.  Constructively and proactively dealing with graffiti, parking and parking enforcement related issues, panhandling and TTC will be issues at the top of my list.

Please provide details on your personal bio.
I have lived in our neighbourhood for 21 years. My career with CRA and as a union leader at the local and national level has resulted in me cultivating respect from management, employees and others from across the country who understand the need for new ideas and leadership based on collaboration and consensus. At the national level, I’m involved in trying to reform the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) to help everyone. At a local level, I develop action plans to keep employees working (including those with disabilities), lower costs and increase efficiencies. I’m also involved in Emergency and Pandemic Planning.

Who do you plan to support for mayor?
I plan to support George Smitherman.  Although I don’t agree with everything he has said and done, he is not as polarizing as some other mayoral candidates and I believe that with me, Brad Feraday, as the Councillor of Ward 32 along with others, we would be able to hold him and the entire council accountable to the residents of the City of Toronto and be able to build consensus on solutions that result in the best decision possible.
