1. What key issues define your campaign platform?
In the next four years, challenging decisions will face the City, as Council tries to strike a balance between the need for fiscal restraint and the protection of city services. Budgets will be tight, requiring honest discussions about priorities, services and taxes. We can not expect other orders of government to always financially assist Toronto. At the same time, we cannot forget the many people who depend on city services in our community and throughout the City. To strike this fine balance, we need a Councillor with experience, leadership and an ability to reach across ideological lines for the betterment of the City. If re-elected, I will continue to serve all the people of Etobicoke North — making sure our voices are heard at City Hall and working to build a better Toronto.
2. Why are you the best candidate for this position?
I have real experience and deliver results for the community I care about. I enjoy learning about our diverse cultures and religions which helps me to understand and serve the community better. By developing coalitions and partnerships within the city and our community, real results can be achieved. I do not promise what cannot be delivered but have demonstrated an ability to bring positive change to Ward 1 — our streets are safer, our neighbourhoods more livable and our community is more prosperous. I have the knowledge, experience and commitment to continue to build on these successes and deliver real results.
3. What specifically do you plan to do for your ward, if elected?
Working with the new Mayor and Council, I will: stand for fiscal responsibility while defending city services; work with the Police and community partners to keep our area safe; continue upgrades to parks and community centres; protect Etobicoke’s private garbage pick up; work for faster transit links and better roads; promote more by-law officers for North Etobicoke; and implement the beautification plan for the Albion Islington Square BIA. By bringing people together within the city and our community, real results can be achieved.
4. Please provide details on your personal bio.
Living most of my life in north Etobicoke, I raised my family here. I have been actively involved in our community for many years. I began my career in politics as school trustee and in 2000 successfully ran for Toronto City Council. Since being elected as Councillor I have contributed to major improvements in our Ward including: building a new Police station for 23 Division; investing millions in parks and community centres; building an international standard cricket ground; establishing a business improvement area at Albion and Islington. I led the charge to keep Etobicoke’s strike free private garbage collection service.
5. Who do you plan to support for mayor?
I am not endorsing any candidate for Mayor. I will work with the new Mayor and Council, whoever they may be, to make Toronto the great city it can and should be.
