1. What key issues define your campaign platform?
I will put the COMMUNITY FIRST at City Hall. Since mega city communities are shut out of local decision-making and consultation. My goal is to connect Ward 6 neighbourhoods to City Hall. I will publish my expenses, voting and attendance records and open a local constituency office. You will always know exactly how I am working for you at City Hall and spending your hard earned tax dollars. I will establish a Community Advisory Group to give me feedback on neighbourhood and city-wide issues. I will ensure that development reflects the character and vision of the neighbourhood and work to attract clean industry, business and jobs to South Etobicoke. There are several vacant schools in the ward and I want to make sure the green spaces around them are kept for family and community uses. I will work for a safe, clean and more prosperous community for all of us.
2. Why are you the best candidate for this position?
Being councillor will be my full-time job. I will put the COMMUNITY FIRST! I will bring a new approach to the job of Councillor: more personal, more available and more accountable to the voters. I have lived in Etobicoke-Lakeshore my entire life, attended school and worked here. I am a community advocate and have worked on many issues such as Mimico redevelopment, protecting Sam Smith Park, more recreation facilities, better playground equipment and improved streetcar service.
As Councillor I will be able to work more effectively. I have a reputation of working co-operatively with everyone involved in a problem. I genuinely want to find the right solutions for our neighbourhoods and City. Strong communities create a strong City.
3. What specifically do you plan to do for your ward if elected?
Be available by establishing a constituency office and local advisory group
Make improved streetcar service a priority
Repair and rebuild existing playgrounds, splash pads, tennis and basketball courts
Fight to get free transit for seniors during off peak hours
I will make sure the community hears about new developments before any commitments are made by the City
Work with federal and provincial representatives to restore funding for social services and transit that was cut in recent years
Ensure new development is designed to Green Standards
Use vacant industrial lands for new jobs and clean industries so that our community prospers
4. Please provide details on your personal bio.
Jem Cain has always called Etobicoke-Lakeshore home. Jem attended Mimico High School, St. Teresa’s School and Church. Jem has worked in the airline, print, healthcare and technology industries.
Jem is an active, committed volunteer and advocate for a better community working with local arts, culture, environment, transit and planning groups. Local industries have used Jem as a liaison with the community.
She is a leader. Jem is vice-chair of the LAMP Board. She has represented her community at the OMB on planning and development proposals and at City Hall on environmental, tax, recreation, health, and accessibility issues.
5. Who do plan to support for mayor?
My mayor needs to be someone with experience, integrity, honesty, an ability to work with others and someone who puts the City first. Like many Torontonians I have not yet decided how to cast my vote for Mayor. As I continue to meet and talk to local residents I will listen to their concerns and opinions and then make my decision. I am confident that I will be able to work with whoever the voters elect as Mayor.
