1. What key issues define your campaign platform?
I identified several issues, which are important to the Ward’s residents. First, the conservative approach to spending. Second – tackling tax hikes. The solution to eliminating the city’s budget deficit lies not in increasing taxes, but looking for funding elsewhere. Therefore, I propose to eliminate two types of taxes to make the lives of Toronto’s residents easier: the vehicle registration tax and the land transfer tax. Unions are a great achievement of our civil society, but the new City Council should take its lessons from the last year’s garbage strike. Garbage pickup should be an essential service and should be outsourced. There are some practical steps, small but effective, which should be taken to resolve the city’s traffic congestion. Another problem which has an influence on traffic – are city roads. Contractors should provide a guarantee for their work and be held responsible for their quality.
2.Why are you the best candidate for this position?
Shalom Toronto described me as “a natural candidate for councilor in Toronto’s Ward 10” since I offer my longstanding political and business experience by being active in the Conservative Party of Canada and Ontario PC party, and as the co-founder of the RC Broadcasting Company. Having participated in two previous elections – in 2006, where I ran in municipal elections in Ward 10 for the first time and in 2007, where I ran for MPP as a PC party candidate, – I am “no newcomer to the world of politics”. Over the years of work as a journalist, when I worked with members of the community, I became aware of Ward 10 issues which prompted my decision to run in the upcoming elections. As a self-made businessman, I know how to keep checks and balances in place and as a result how to treat taxpayers’ money.
3. What specifically do you plan to do for your ward?
There are four issues, which I would like to tackle immediately. I will vote against Bathurst Manor Plaza renovation and Sanofi’s building rezoning application, as well as closing off-ramps to Allen Road as it is proposed. To tackle the gridlock I will “push” for the synchronization of the green light corridor as it is proposed by Rob Ford with the SCOOT system. Revising and re-adjusting bus schedules should also be dealt with immediately to avoid large intervals between the buses and have 2 or 3 of them coming at the same time and revitalising Earl Bales Park.
4. Please provide details on your personal bio.
Igor Toutchinski is a journalist and a successful businessman being the co-founder and CEO of the RC Broadcasting Company. As his company expanded, Igor actively participated in the local community and political life. He has been serving as a special counsel to the League of Human Rights of the B’nai Brith Canada. Igor has also been a member of the JRCC and New Start, a non-profit organization in which he uses his personal experience to assist new immigrants. Igor was born in 1957 in Ukraine and graduated from Lviv University with a degree in Journalism. He speaks 4 languages and wants to contribute his dynamic personality to Ward 10.
5. Who do you plan to support for mayor?
I will support Rob Ford for mayor.
