1. What key issues define your campaign platform?
I want to bring back responsible spending to City Hall. We need to get back to basics and identify what our priorities are. For example, rather than sinking millions into redoing Nathan Phillips Square we should be fixing roads and old infrastructure.
I would like to bring back a “Can Do” attitude to City Hall and make it an easier place to navigate. Many permits are taking too long to process, we need to do better.
We need more community space, especially in Ward 10 which has much less than many other Wards. Our seniors and youth have nowhere to go for many of their programs and activities.
Crime, safe streets, better transit and more subways are important issues that I plan to address if elected.
Working together, accessible government and responsible spending are important to residents.
I have the experience to make change happen.
2. Why are you the best candidate for this position?
I have experience, knowledge of Ward issues and a solid track record of getting things done. I have been working in the public sector for almost two decades including over 10 years in Ward 10 where I have successfully helped to make improvements to the community.
I have worked on planning applications and led numerous working groups made up of local residents and City Staff. Together we resolved issues and made things happen; Banting Park, a new Accessible Water Play and Sensory Garden at Earl Bales Park, Community Gardens and Boulevard improvements. I was instrumental in raising funds to complete the large mural at the Bathurst/Wilson intersection.
As a consensus builder I am often able to succeed where others cannot. Ward 10 is multicultural and by working with people from diverse backgrounds I have gained a good understanding of the community.
I am experienced, responsive and fiscally responsible.
3. What specifically do you plan to do for your ward, if elected?
I will work with the community to bring more trees to the area, improve parks, playgrounds and streetscapes and ensure appropriate development that fits within communities.
I will engage small businesses and work together to bring a Business Improvement Area to the Ward.
I will work to find desperately needed community space in the Ward. Our seniors and youth need a place where they can meet, participate in sports and activities and hold events.
I will respond to residents, follow up on their questions and concerns, spend tax dollars wisely and represent their interests at City Hall.
4. Please provide details on your personal bio.
I was born in The Netherlands and immigrated to Canada as a teenager. I have lived in North York for over 30 years. After my children were born I completed my commercial pilot’s licence. I have worked in the Public Sector for almost two decades, over 10 years as Senior Executive Assistant to the local Councillor. I am a member of Toastmasters, the Successful Woman Council, Russian Film Festival Organizing Committee and past President of a local ratepayers organization. I chaired “Blossom”, an event to raise funds for the North York Women’s Shelter. I believe people CAN make a difference.
5. Who do you support for mayor?
I have not made a decision on which candidate I support for Mayor. I have a track record of working well with people and as a Councillor I will work with whoever is elected as Mayor. I will continue to watch the debates.
