What key issues define your campaign platform?
For the last seven years, I’ve watched as the current group of councillors have failed to address the critical issues facing our city. Service levels continue to decline, parks and infrastructure are not maintained, traffic is terrible and the city’s financial position continues to deteriorate.
It’s time for change. We need fresh ideas, renewed energy and the courage to take action. With a strong voice and a steadfast commitment to service excellence and financial responsibility I will work to:
• Eliminate waste and inefficiencies
• Balance the budget and keep taxes in check
• Get Toronto moving with an integrated traffic and transit plan
• Create an open, accessible and accountable city hall with a
strong customer service focus
• Shift power to residents on local and planning issues
• Keep our neighbourhoods strong, safe and vibrant
What specifically do you plan to do for your ward, if elected?
I will promote safe and vibrant neighbourhoods with strong community spirit by encouraging civic engagement and giving residents greater opportunity for input and influence on local issues. I will give residents a stronger voice on planning and development issues with the creation of Local Appeal Boards. The current councillors have had the authority to set up these boards for years but haven’t. I will work to enhance the use and accessibility of our public spaces by creating park improvement associations. I will develop community hubs at schools and improve city and neighbourhood traffic with an integrated traffic and transit plan.
Personal bio
As a senior manager of economic development, I delivered consistent budget surpluses, developed innovative private sector partnerships and created long-term tourism strategies and signature events with measurable economic impact, including Nuit Blanche, Summerlicious and Winterlicious and Millennium Lights.
In the community, I’m vice president of my residents’ association, chair of the social justice committee at my church and recently organized a speaker series to address the important issues facing Toronto and promote civic engagement. I run a school book drive for priority neighbourhoods, host an annual community clean-up, helped start a local farmers’ market and volunteer for Out of the Cold.
Who do you plan to support for mayor?
I am not endorsing any mayoral candidate. I’m listening to all the candidates at this point, especially those who combine a strong commitment to fiscal order with positive, substantive policy and long-term vision to build a vital and prosperous Toronto for all. I can work with any of the leading candidates or anyone else who is committed to take action to ensure our community and city are sustainable, vibrant and prosperous.
