Ward 7 (York West)
Ward 7 is one to watch during this year’s municipal election race.
Veteran and controversial incumbent Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti is running for mayor.
Although Mammoliti says he’s committed to the mayor’s race, some contenders looking to replace him in Ward 7 speculate he will bail on the mayor’s campaign and seek re-election in the York West ward.
The community, often in the spotlight, has faced several issues including deep political rifts between supporters and critics of Mammoliti, crime, ventures of the Emery Village Business Improvement Area, the controversial installation of $300,000 lights at a children’s soccer pitch and a now-resolved standoff between Mammoliti and business owners on Islington Avenue and banning cars during the summer at Rowntree Mills Park.
