Ward 8 (York West)
Development is playing a key role in Ward 8.
Last November, councillors approved a broad overview of development at York University over the next quarter century.
Further studies will take place as actual development plans for 490 acres of land at York take shape in York’s academic core and six outer “precincts.”
Another recent high-profile development focused on a proposal by El-Ad Developments at 470 Sentinel Rd. and 1, 35 and 40 Fountainhead Rd. north of Finch Avenue.
The developer owns four rental buildings housing about 1,500 apartments at the site and in January received permission to build eight condominium buildings with 1.035 units. The condos will have their own pools and other amenities.
The developer won a controversial battle to build a private indoor pool just for tenants.
But a furious Councillor Anthony Perruzza said the city lost out on an opportunity to have a larger city-run aquatic complex for the broader, high-priority community.
