1. What key issues define your campaign platform?
i) Keeping the Humber River Regional Hospital (Finch site), open. I fought twice before to keep the hospital open and will continue this fight together with residents in the Ward.
ii) Creating more employment/training opportunities.
iii) Reducing crime.
iv) Freeze residential and business property taxes.
v) Eliminate vehicle registration fees, land transfer taxes and user fees from vulnerable neighbourhoods.
vi) Help to prevent further increases in TTC fares, costs of recreational programs and other essential services.
2. Why are you the best candidate for this position?
I’ve a proven track record of service. In my political years, I accomplished 150 different projects - all initiated by me, sometimes against the wishes of City staff or private institutions. For example:
• Subway extension
• Soccer stadium, Keele Street
• Ghana Mansey, Weston & Finch
• Elderbrook Lands – reduced number of proposed highrise buuildings from 7 to 2
• Tennis Canada building
• Salvation Army building, Yorkwood Gates
• Fountain Head Community Centre – accommodates Somali, Vietnamese, Southeast Asian communities
• Tsunami efforts, 4 large containers sent to Sri Lanka
• Chanel Luke Fundraising Drive
• $4.2 Million Oakdale Community Centre
• Yorkwoods Library Theatre
• Over 5,000 tax appeals launched and property taxes lowered
• New Library, Sheridan Mall.
I’ve been an entrepreneur for the past 4 years and this provided an opportunity to experience life from a different, and more balanced, perspective.
3. What specifically do you plan to do for your Ward, if elected?
Keeping the Humber River Regional Hospital open is a major priority as closure will result in more unemployment and a reduction in health care in our region. I am working with the Humber River Health Coalition to achieve this goal.
In the 1980s, when others scoffed at me, I pushed for the extension of the York-Spadina subway line. I would like to ensure that the subway gets to York University and to Jane & Steeles.
I’ll work with businesses and agencies to create more jobs; I’ll reduce unemployment by at least 10% (from the current 25%).
