The south-west Scarborough ward bounded by Victoria Park Avenue Eglinton Avenue East and the CNR tracks to the south was left vacant in 2006, when long-time councillor Gerry Altobello retired from municipal politics.
The election to replace him was close-fought. In the end, candidate Adrian Heaps won a narrow victory over Michelle Berardinetti, married to local MPP and former city councillor Lorenzo Berardinetti.
Their battle didn’t end at that point, however. Lorenzo Berardinetti’s executive assistant John Lyras launched a compliance audit of Heaps’ election expenses. Michelle Berardinetti launched a libel suit against Heaps over a piece of election literature he sent out.
Heaps settled the lawsuit with Berardinetti, and was vindicated in the compliance audit – and Toronto Council covered his costs in both cases.
That has become a major controversy – and as Michelle Berardinetti has registered to run against Heaps, look for it to become a central issue in the 2010 election there.
