What key issues define your campaign platform?
Key Issues: Youth unemployment and Rising Crime, Better Senior Care, More Affordable Day Care services and After-school programs and Lower TTC fares for Seniors and the Working poor. As a member of the City Council I would work passionately with all local community agencies, the provincial government and the private sector to consider assigning work projects to Ward 35 with the expectation of creating more employment opportunities for its residents and ultimately safer streets for the community. At the same time partnering with the private sector & developers to build more affordable homes for Low Income families and Seniors.
Why are you the best candidate for this position?
I think the job of city councillor goes beyond being just a good politician. A big part of it is being truly aware of what it means to be working and still have to go to the Food Bank to feed your family. To be working and have to turn to someone in the TTC line for a token to get on the bus. To be working and have to go to get a Pay-Day loan to help pay your rent. To be afraid of losing your minimum wage job at Tim Horton’s, Wall-Mart or Price Choppers because you wont be able to afford the medication you need for your arthritis or high-blood pressure. Since I don’t know the abilities of my opponents I can only say that I would be a darn good councillor for Ward 35 and for the Toronto City Council.
What specifically do you plan to do for your ward, if elected?
If elected I would like to see a Technical Institute or College Campus set up in Ward 35 with practical 1 & 2 year programs that would put graduating students in demand by employers in the next 5 years to 10 years.
Personal bio:
I immigrated to Canada from Guyana in the mid 1970s and later went on to pursue my post secondary education at York University, completing the degree program in business administration in 1989. While at York University I became involved in school politics and was an active member of the Caribbean Student’s Association. While considering my career options I held a number of positions with the Ontario government. My last position was with Bell Canada as an Executive Care Consultant with the Office of the V.P.
