What key issues define your campaign platform?
The first is ʻBalanced Development.ʼ Ward 36 faces several critical development issues: the current site
plan at the Quarry Lands needs reconsideration, wind turbines off the Bluffs must be financially viable and
not jeopardize community health, and the Bus Rapid Transit Line in Transit City and the revitalization of
Kingston Rd. and Markington Square are much needed.
The second is ʻSustainable City Hall Operations.ʼ We must work with our provincial and federal partners
on a sustainable funding strategy so that Toronto is less reliant on controversial taxes and one-time
funds. Furthermore, decision-making at City Hall is in need of greater transparency, competitive bidding
and increased community participation.
The third is ʻCultural Enrichment and Community Engagement.ʼ Our diverse population is a tremendous
resource that needs continued support. We must build partnerships to maintain and create programs that
enrich and engage communities in youth leadership, arts and culture celebrations, and crime prevention.
Why are you the best candidate for this position?
I have the training and practical knowledge to immediately find solutions for the unique challenges facing Ward 36. At 33, I also bring a fresh perspective and new passion that is much needed at City Hall.
We must build strong partnerships. My background as an educator and advocate is a proven asset when
searching for common ground. I have experience teaching and working with diverse groups on local and
city-wide issues and can bridge the divide between residents and City Hall. I have academic training in city planning from both York University and the University of Toronto. I possess expertise in metropolitan governance and sustainable urban development. I understand how to achieve greater livability and prosperity in our communities. Many issues facing Ward 36 and Toronto focus on growth, development and community values. I recognize the nuance needed to resolve these issues, and bring a strong voice of reason to City Council.
What specifically do you plan to do for your ward, if elected?
I will work with city staff, the developer and the community to find a suitable plan for the Quarry Lands. Similarly, I will voice residentsʼ concerns about wind turbines along our waterfront. I will see that the Revitalization plans for Birchcliff and Cliffside proceed in consultation with businesses and residents. I will ensure that Ward 36 gets its fair share of transit access as outlined in Transit City. I will support the current Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS) initiative in Scarborough Village. I will foster dialogue on community safety through regular town hall meetings with officers from 41 and 43 Division.
Personal bio:
I am a life long resident of Scarborough, a graduate of Neil McNeil H.S., and my wife and I are
homeowners in Birchliff, Ward 36. I am a motorist, a transit rider and commute by bike whenever possible. Currently, I am an instructor at the University of Toronto Scarborough, where I am a Ph.D. candidate studying the role of community groups in metropolitan governance. I have served on numerous university-wide committees and was a Screener for the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. Over the past seven years, Iʼve volunteered with several organizations on planning and environmental issues facing our community.
Who do you plan to support for mayor?
I see strengths in the platforms of all the frontrunners. I agree with the fiscal responsibility proposed by George Smitherman and Rob Ford. I respect Joe Pantaloneʼs experience at city hall, and his commitment to the arts and the needs of seniors. I applaud Rocco Rossiʼs ideas on election reform and term limits. I commend Sarah Thompson for her recognition and support of local business and entrepreneurs. I am open and committed to working with whoever is elected Mayor. I have no party affiliations and will let the residents of Ward 36 set the agenda.
