What key issues define your campaign platform?
The people of Toronto tell us that they are not happy with the city’s financial management. My first priority is to continue fighting against the “tax and spend” mentality of the current government and for more diligent management of taxpayers’ money. My second priority is to continue to press for an overhaul of TTC operating and service practices, and for financially responsible public transit investments that upgrade technology and improve service. Third, I want to carry on with efforts to re-develop redundant public resources in Ward 37 to revitalize and energize the community. And of course, I want to continue with our efforts to increase public engagement in the civic processes that directly affect their day-to-day lives.
Why are you the best candidate for this position?
Experience, leadership and a deep understanding of the community developed over 38 years living in the Ward. Over the past seven years, my staff and I have developed an extraordinary depth of knowledge of our Ward and expertise in navigating the city’s operating complexities. We are very good at building local consensus and at bringing the city’s resources to bear to improve our neighbourhoods, engage our communities, and strengthen our city. We have intimate knowledge of every road, street and neighbourhood, and have built close working relationships with community leaders, businesses and residents in every area of the Ward. Residents and businesses know us as the folks to call when there are problems, and as the people who get things done. While helping our constituents, we have handled more than 14,000 files since I came to city hall in 2003.
What specifically do you plan to do for your ward, if elected?
I plan to continue fighting for Scarborough’s fair share of City resources and services. I want to carry on with our initiative to re-purpose and re-develop the surplus school lands around Bendale BTI and Thomson Collegiate to create a major community and recreation centre with resources for all residents, including seniors, young people and families. I will continue working to replace the Maryvale Library with a new, 10,000 square foot facility at Parkway Mall. I will continue working with business leaders, churches and NGOs to develop mentoring and job opportunities for our young people.
Personal bio:
Before turning to politics, I earned a BA in economics and finance, worked in the financial services sector and launched my own business consulting firm. I came to Toronto politics as an executive assistant to the former Ward 37 Councillor, and in 2003 won my first term as councillor. Since that time, I and my staff have been instrumental in improving policing, launching and supporting local BIAs, holding an annual job fair reaching thousands, creating the Taste of Lawrence Festival and expanding community facilities for seniors and youth. I was raised and still reside in Ward 37.
Who do you plan to support for mayor?
The choice of mayor is up to the people. I plan to work with whoever they choose to build a better city.
