1. Why are you the best candidate for trustee?
I am the best candidate for trustee in York Centre because I am long time resident of ward; I have the experience, having served as a parent advocate for the past ten years in various local schools. That coupled with my work in the wider community has given me a firsthand look at the needs and the opportunities to make a positive impact in terms of the decision which will affect the education of our young people. I am fiscally responsible and have a vested interest in making sure that education is attainable to all children. It is my passion.
2. What changes would you like to see at the school board in the next four years?
Firstly, I would like to see an equitable funding formula in place which will serve all children, all schools, in all neighbourhoods. Secondly, it is my hope that the board will review how it identifies students especially those with special needs. I think the time has come for dual identification as a way to ensuring the all students attain their full potential. Thirdly, we must work hard to enhance the image of the TDSB as an institution we could all be proud of – a place where our children get nurtured by employees who are treated with respect.
3. What is your position on the TDSB consolidating under-enrolled schools and selling off closed school properties?
I understand to need to be prudent; however, I am not in favor of school closure and subsequent sell off. I feel we can consolidate as necessary, but it would make much more sense to look at options such as the building of community hubs as a great way to promoting stronger relations with other stakeholders in society. This concept is already promising and therefore should be pursue vigorously.
4. Do you support the province’s decision to try to negotiate two-year, no wage increase contracts with the school board’s unionized employees when existing agreements expire?
I cannot say I support the province’s decision. However, I will support any decision taken in this regard as long as it is fair and equitable to the all staff of the TDSB. Further, it would be extremely challenging for anyone to negotiate let alone accept these terms. In my opinion, this sends the wrong message and definitely not the kind of progressive thinking needed to enhance our school system.
5. Please provide personal details on your bio.
My involvement in our school system is well known having served stints as chair, co-chair & treasurer of various schools parent councils in diverse areas. A community builder and activist for the past 15 years, I am currently serving a fifth term as Trustee of a Non-profit Faith Based organization. I have 20 years experience in the telecommunication industry in Toronto. I reside in the Downsview area, with my wife, Sherlene (a teacher), and our three children all in public schools (York Memorial Collegiate & Summit Heights).
