1. Why are you the best candidate for trustee?
* I have experience and a stellar record of accomplishments. I know how to get things done at the School Board.
* I oppose cuts to staff and programs.
* I oppose deferral of badly needed maintenance in order to balanced the budget.
* I have shown leadership in program improvements, and successfully fought for support programs.
* An initiative of mine to establish the Toronto Lands Corporation has brought $95 million in sales of surplus properties with a further $39 million pending. Redevelop-ment projects and sales over the next 5 years will bring an additional $222 million, to fund our capital program.
* I have shown leadership in program improvements, and successfully fought for support programs.
2. What changes would you like to see at the school board in the next four years?
I would hope that the Board with support from parents and organizations, federations and unions will be able to persuade the provincial government to revise the antiquated and inadequate funding model to reflect the real costs of quality public education. I would like a provincial revue of trustee salaries and supports to better reflect the work load involved. I am paid part time and work full time.
3. What is your position on the TDSB consolidating under-enrolled schools and selling off closed school properties?
I support consolidation of under-enrolled schools, providing that is the decision of the Area Review Committee (ARC) after it has followed the Ministry and Board review policy and involved the community at large. The decision to sell a school recommended for closure or lease it, should be made by the TDSB and the Toronto Lands Corporation.
4. Do you support the province’s decision to try to negotiate two-year, no wage increase contracts with the school board’s unionized employees when existing agreements expire?
No. This makes a mockery of collective bargaining and tries to balance the provincial books on the backs of working people.
